What Is Voltage?

Voltage is the electrical pressure that drives current through a circuit. It describes the difference in electric potential between two points, such as a hot conductor and a neutral conductor. A circuit needs voltage to move electrical charge, operate equipment, and deliver power from a source to a connected load.

Key Takeaways About Voltage

  • Voltage measures electrical potential difference.
  • A load needs voltage to operate.
  • Voltage and current are not the same.

How Voltage Works

Two workers inspect an open electrical panel, one using pliers as a bright spark flashes beside a multimeter on a workbench

Voltage creates the electrical pressure that moves charge through a complete path. A source, such as a utility supply or battery, establishes a potential difference between conductors. Connected equipment receives energy as current flows through its internal parts.

An electrician measures voltage between two points with a meter set for the circuit type. The reading helps show whether power reaches a device and whether the supply is stable enough for that device. A voltage check can also help separate a supply problem from a damaged switch, loose connection, or failed component.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we troubleshoot a circuit, we check voltage at the source, along the wiring path, and at the device. We compare those readings with the circuit layout and operating symptoms. A missing or changing reading can point us toward an open connection, damaged component, or supply issue.

Voltage in Practice: A Real-World Example

A receptacle may appear intact while a connected appliance remains off. During electrical troubleshooting, a voltage test can show whether power reaches the receptacle and whether the problem lies in the circuit or the appliance.
