What Is a Load Center?

A load center is an electrical panel that receives power from the service equipment and distributes it through branch circuit breakers. The enclosure contains busbars, breakers, neutral connections, and grounding connections. A load center may serve a home or a specific section of a building, depending on the electrical system design.

Key Takeaways About Load Center

  • A load center contains busbars and circuit breakers.
  • Each breaker protects an assigned branch circuit.
  • A load center is not always the service disconnect.

How Load Center Works

A load center receives power from service equipment or an upstream feeder. Power reaches the panel busbars, and each circuit breaker connects to a busbar to send electricity into an assigned branch circuit. The neutral bar provides a return path for grounded circuit conductors, while the grounding bar connects equipment grounding conductors.

During an electrical panel upgrade, the load center must match the building's wiring, available space, and service arrangement. A circuit breaker opens its circuit when current rises beyond the circuit's intended capacity. A feeder supplies power to a load center that serves a separate area, such as an addition or detached structure.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we inspect a load center, we check the enclosure, busbars, breaker connections, neutral terminations, and grounding paths. During an electrical panel upgrade, we also verify that the replacement panel fits the existing service arrangement and supports the circuits connected to it.

Load Center in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an electrical panel upgrade in a Fort Wayne home, the existing load center may be replaced with a panel that provides suitable breaker spaces and connections for the home's branch circuits. The electrician identifies each circuit, transfers conductors correctly, and checks the completed terminations.
