What Is a Photocell?

Photocell is a light-sensitive electrical control that switches an outdoor lighting circuit on when surrounding light falls and off when daylight returns. The device responds to ambient light, so it can control fixtures without a manual switch or programmed schedule. Photocells are common in dusk-to-dawn lighting applications.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • Light level, not motion, controls the switching action.
  • A photocell suits fixtures that should operate from dusk through dawn.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

A photocell senses ambient light through a light-sensitive component. As daylight fades, the control changes the electrical state of the lighting circuit and allows the connected fixture to operate. When daylight returns, the control changes state again and turns the fixture off. The switching point depends on the device design and the light reaching its sensor.

Outdoor lighting installers place the sensor where it can read general sky light without being affected by the fixture it controls. A shield, nearby wall, or direct glare can cause unwanted switching behavior. A photocell works well for dusk-to-dawn operation, while a motion sensor responds to movement and may turn a light on only when someone enters the detection area.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we install or service outdoor lighting, we check the photocell location, wiring, and sensor response under changing light conditions. We also look for fixture glare or obstructions that could make the control switch at the wrong time. Our team matches the control method to the intended lighting pattern.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants a driveway light to operate from evening through morning without adjusting a wall switch. An electrician installs a photocell where it can sense open-sky daylight and connects it to the outdoor fixture.
